14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. (Matthew: 14-16)
The past couple of days I have been following the news. I am shocked at the nature of the stories that dominate the headlines: child abuse, murder, adultery, war, famine. If you turn on the primetime television you see much of the same, in the guise of entertainment. It is evident that the culture around us is becoming darker. It is obvious that the moral compass of our planet has taken a turn for the worse. If you are a believer, this should not be a surprise for you.
7 When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. 8 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains.(Mark 13: 7-8)
We know that the world is getting darker and will become even more so before Christ’s return. However, it is during these times that our light should shine all the brighter. The darkness hastens people to look for the light. Let your actions and your lives be lights for Christ.
Be aware that the darkness hates the light. The brighter you shine the more the darkness will work to snuff out your light. It will press in upon you and attempt to force you to extinguish your light.
11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. (Matthew 5::11-12)
The darkness may press in against you. However, we know that the battle is ours. We know that the battle against death and sin has already been fought. Let the darkness and the world challenge you. You know that If you go out into the night and strike a match the darkness will flee. It will lurk and hover beyond the light. However, it is powerless to extinguish your light. So it is with the power of darkness in the world. The powers of darkness in the world are powerless to extinguish the truth of Christ. Stand strong in the face of the world. Let your difference be a testimony to Christ. Stand in the face of the darkness and shine forth the light of our risen King.
On account of me you will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them. 10 And the gospel must first be preached to all nations. (Mark 13:10)
